The 36-48V 500W Cyrstalyte motor is a DC brushless motor that contains a synchronous AC motor stator (the fixed inner part of the motor) with a permanent magnet rotor (the rotating outer part of the motor). Because the rotor does not have any electronics in it, the motor can be made simpler and without commutation (brushes for electrical connection). This results in:
- high efficiency (less energy lost as heat),
- quiet operation (only bearings and coil windings make any noise) and
- high reliable - only the motor bearings can ever wear out.
The motor is preinstalled in the wheel and the wheel/motor unit mounts directly to a 135mm wide 9mm rear wheel dropout. Unlike other models of the Crystalyte system which use 3/8" dropouts, the Cannon motor allows for mounting on most modern bicycles wheel mount including hybrids, road, touring and mountain bikes. 3/8" dropouts are typically used in cruiser style bikes only.
Important: Do not overtighten the 2.3mm spokes during truing. We use the TM-1 Tension Meter by Park Tool to keep the spokes properly tightened. Based on measurements of new kits, the tension on an unused 26" wheel is approximately 28 on the drive side and 18 on the non-drive side. This converts to about 100 Kfg on the drive side and an estimated 10 Kfg on the non-drive side. See the Park Tool conversion table for exact force values.
The stated power rating by the manufacturer is 500W. However, this figure can be a little misleading since the motor can use up to the output rating of the controller which at a peak charge state will be approximately 38V x 20A = 760W. However, this is the amount drawn from the battery not the power output of the motor, which is typically tested using a dynamometer. Using a dynamometer the input power can be compared to the output power to give an efficiency and torque curve.
The motor rotation is sensed using a hall-effect sensor, which is read by the controller so that it can provide the correct excitation of the coils.
Typical operation at 20mph w/ a 26" wheel system on flat ground will draw under 300W.
Specifications: 9 winding motor rated and tested at 48V for a peak power rating of 640W.
